When it comes to men and the cosmetic aesthetic world, there are often a lot of questions and controversy surrounding this topic.
Men have become a fast-growing segment within the aesthetic and cosmetic industries. In the past few years, men’s grooming and aesthetic treatments have become a common trend.
Do men require aesthetic treatments? Are they necessary? How far is too far? What are the do’s & don'ts?
We sat down with Dr. Mehri Pourkand, an aesthetic physician with over 24 years of experience and 18 years of practice in the UAE to give us the low down on today’s skin care trends for men
Botox:
It is one of the main go-to treatments for men. An important one. However there a few factors to consider before going ahead. While the application of Botox for men is the same as women, the target is different. For women, we aim for high arched eyebrows, smoother forehead, sometimes minimal lines around the face, while keeping natural features alive. For men we look at flat or leveled eyebrows and preserve some lines. We need to ensure that we don’t transform a man’s face into feminine shapes and features. Men must preserve their naturally masculine shapes and lines.
Pigmentation treatments:
This is a concern for both men and women. First steps would be speaking to the experts and doctors for a thorough assessment and to analyze the cause and suitable treatment of the pigmentation.
Pigmentation treatments are generally safe and superficial. Many do not consider what months should you do their treatments.
A lot of pigmentation causes are due to sun exposure. We advise starting and proceeding with the treatments during the cooler months. Take advantage of the winter and cooler seasons to intensify your skin care treatments where there is less sun exposure and much less intense heat. As professionals, we would feel more comfortable doing peels, laser and other types of pigmentation treatments.
Skin Boosters:
This is a gentle treatment often used to moisturize and hydrate the skin, leaving it naturally radiant and healthy. The procedure goes by using very thin needles in the superficial layer of the skin to apply water, hyaluronic acid and sometimes amino acid and vitamins. It is best described as applying moisturizer under the skin instead of over the skin. It enhances the health and radiance of the skin making it look fresh and vibrant. Skin boosters do not add volume and does not change the structure or look of the skin.
We recommend this treatment to be done once every 2 to 3 weeks. After almost 3 sessions, the treatment can be done once every 3 to 4 months. Keeping into consideration outside factors and the patient’s lifestyle habits such as sun exposure, physical work out, smoking, and other factors.
Vitamins and Supplements:
The big question mark! Our go to recommendation is vitamins C & D and the regular needed multivitamins. Essentially, vitamins C & D are one of the main factors of healthy skin, amongst other health benefits.
Living in the UAE, we often believe that due to the heat and sun intensity we wouldn’t need vitamin D. On the contrary, the harsh nature of the climate in this region urges us to stay mainly indoors, which resulted in most residents to have vitamin D deficiency.
Age:
It is refreshing to see more men (and women) looking after their appearances and paying attention to their skin health and routines. We do draw the line at age. When it comes to Botox and other injectable, we do not recommend anyone proceeding with it under the age of 20 or 25.
Skin care can start as young as 14 years of age. Starting the habit of properly cleansing, moisturizing and sun protection is always an advantage on the long run.
