It wasn’t that long ago when container homes were a revolutionary idea. Taking a building block of globalization and repurposing it into modern residential design — what a thought! But nowadays we may well have reached peak container home; we see them everywhere. And yet, we haven’t seen any that look quite this… uh, hallucinatory.
The Joshua Tree Residence is the work of London-based designer James Whitaker and is set to be built in the Californian desert just outside Joshua Tree. The 2,153-square-foot house will be the vacation home of a Los Angeles film producer and his wife. (How very L.A. of them.)
The bright white containers are a total contrast to the environment and burst through the rocky peaks of the desert like a giant crystal form. Inside will be a living/dining space, kitchen, and three bedrooms. The interior is minimal AF with white walls, concrete flooring, and sparse furnishings. The project will go to construction next year, but in the meantime, we have these renderings to drool over.
If we saw this house while driving through the desert in a vintage Cadillac Eldorado, we would definitely do a double take. Is that real or am I tripping?
