One should have anticipated this. Lately, Bugatti has consistently released a bunch of personalised cars, such as the six-unit-only Les Légendes de Bugatti’ series in 2013, the Chiron Zebra special commission for a Qatar customer in 2019 and the now-famous Divo ‘Lady Bug’ of 2021. The ingredients of a customisation program were already in place, and now the French carmaker has finally formalised the same.

Named the ‘Bugatti Sur Mesure’, which translates to ‘tailor’, the bespoke customisation program builds upon the marque’s distinguished history of coachbuilding and handcrafted interiors. While Bugatti already provides its customers with practically unlimited choices for exterior paint schemes and leather finishes, the Bugatti Sur Mesure is for those who want to go a step further and create a unique piece of personalised automotive art.

The formulation of this division comes on the back of growing customer demand for ultra-customised designs, materials and finishes. And to showcase the brand’s mastery of customised projects, the division unveiled its first customer project along with its launch.

The first project of this newfound division takes inspiration from renowned racing driver Louis Chiron, and his famed ‘31 French Grand Prix win in a Bugatti Type 51 emblazoned with the number ‘32’. The first project car gets the same number on its body, painted entirely by hand, and a new fading ‘EB’ painted pattern developed fresh by the division. Two new exterior colours were created to pay homage to the racing Bugattis of the ‘20s and ‘30s. The cabin of this project car sees the ‘32’ and ‘Grand Prix’ motifs inscribed on the centre console, headrests, door sills and entry lights.

Hendrik Malinowski, Bugatti’s Managing Director for Sales and Marketing, comments, “Our clients are often deeply intrigued by Bugatti’s motorsport lineage, and it’s fitting that the first Sur Mesure commission should pay homage to one of our great racing icons. We’re so taken with this creation that we intend to make many of this customer’s ideas available to more of our clients with the Chiron Pur Sport.”
