The stars were out(rageous) at Monday night’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala. This year’s theme? “Camp: Notes on Fashion.” (Not camp as in s’mores, but camp as in, you know, campy.) It was inspired by Susan Sontag’s seminal 1964 essay “Notes on Camp,” in which she defined camp as “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.” (It’s okay, we don’t really know what it means either.) The men of the evening certainly came through on the theme, looking out-of-the-box and out-of-their-minds. Here are the best and boldest looks we saw.
SHAWN MENDES
Toronto’s very own Shawn Mendes was killing it in this sleek, Western-inspired Saint Laurent tux and black boots. The singer also sported some NSYNC-chic gold-streaked hair. Just the right Goldilocks amount of camp.
HARRY STYLES
Fashion-forward singer and gala presenter Harry Styles took the camp theme to heart with this high-waisted, see-through, pussybow Gucci jumpsuit. That’s how you free the nipple with taste. Take notes, Adam Levine.
RYAN MURPHY
American Horror Story creator Ryan Murphy went full Liberace with his custom pearl-embroidered suit and cape by Christian Siriano. Despite what The Incredibles might tell you, capes are always a fun addition to an outfit.
JARED LETO
Actor Jared Leto takes home the Most Striking Look award for this outrageous fit, replete with his own severed head. The red and black Gucci dress covered in jewels was a devilish standout, but really, his plus-one stole the show.
ODELL BECKHAM JR.
American football star Odell Beckham Jr.’s Met look was certainly one of the funner ones of the night, consisting of a tux with cut-off sleeves and a kilt. We’d call him the Russell Westbrook of the NFL, but we’re not so sure he’d be into that comparison.
OMARI HARDWICK
Bright and springy is what actor Omari Hardwick served up on the pink carpet last night. Decked out in a green and gold Gucci x Dapper Dan suit with brownish red boots, Hardwick’s look was a splash of retro colour that really fit with the evening’s theme.
DEV HYNES
Another bright splash of colour was served up by musical virtuoso Dev Hynes, who wore a light blue Gucci suit with a pink lapel and a yellow turtleneck. To complete the dapper look, he also rocked a floral headscarf. Also, check out the initials embroidered on his cuffs. It’s all in the deets.
