OT is one of the most recognized artists in the electronic music scene in Cairo, Egypt. Supported by lots international and local artists, he’s been feeling the responsibility of always showing more than what’s expected. The electronic music scene in Egypt is underground, but is starting to grow. OT has managed to create his own fanbase over the past three years. He started his career signing progressive house tracks with well-known labels such as ICONYC and Golden Wings Music in Argentina. Now it’s for him to show us more of what he got.
OT is also a film-maker and the struggle has always been finding time to do both. OT has decided to stay underground, and release with no future plans for what he really loves. “I don’t care about the numbers, of course one day I’d love to have millions of followers. But I want to take it slowly, and earn it.”
What makes OT and other artists spend most of their time creating music if does not get that reward neither financially or numerically?
“Anyone who has started producing does it out of love, always trying to find something we’ve never heard before. This is where the magic happens. I got really confused during quarantine and I thought a lot about switching to a more commercial genre, but I did not feel it. It felt wrong!”
What’s your advice to young local artists?
“To support each other even if you have a different taste. we’re all working for the same cause.”
Who do you look up to in the underground music scene?
“I look up to some of my close friends who dig deep into honest music, but if i have to pick one it would be ‘Moff’. He’s a great artist who I think has the right mentality and great skills, signed with Egyptian label ‘Rakete’ and many more. There are plenty but this one has been inspirational.”
Do all your friends support your music?
“Yes, most of them do. They keep me going.”
What techniques do you use to engage listeners?
“I try to be far from what’s expected but at the same time find an area in between. My studio sessions bring out lots of experimental stuff that is not easy for a non-techno freak to hear.”
Do you consider signing in bigger labels or do you plan on keeping it that way?
“Releasing tracks on my own is definitely not the same as signing them. I feel free when I do that, but after a couple more releases I will sign with labels again. I just think we as artists need to establish our sounds first.”
What changed in your music in your latest release?
This past year I’ve been trying to create a new sound that would not be stuck in a specific genre, I used to produce progressive house with a tempo of 123 and above. Void is a bit slower with lots of random sequences as if it’s being performed live.
Enjoy a new comeback track ‘Void’ from OT who is no doubt a name you’ll be hearing a lot more about in the future.
